Adobe photoshop cs6 free download

Adobe Photoshop CS6 is the stable version of the industry standard image editor with some interesting new features.
Probably the most notable new feature is the Content Aware tool which makes editing Photoshop more "intelligent" plus there's a new design and a streamlined interface. In addition, basic video editing functions have been added for the first time.
When you first open Adobe Photoshop CS6, the most eye-catching thing is the revamped colorful user interface. However, if you don't like the new look, you can revert to the old grey interface via Preferences - Interface. Beyond this however, there are some useful new features.
Content Aware
Content Aware intelligently moves selected objects and adjusts them accordingly with the background or surrounding objects. This enables you to simply drag and drop objects in Photoshop much more easily without having to readjust the background. Don't like the position of a person in an image? Just move them to another position instantly and the background automatically adjusts.

Video Editing
Adobe Photoshop CS6 brings video editing to Photoshop for the first time. Its integrated with all of Photoshop's traditional tools which makes it very powerful when it comes to retouching scenes, adjusting colors and filter sets etc. It also allows you to add audio tracks although it's not very advanced otherwise.
Bridge file browser and Mini Bridge
Adobe Photoshop CS6 features a more powerful file browser which allows you to sort and manage pictures according to specific metadata. The fully integrated file browser with thumbnail previews photos quickly and opens them instantly for easier library management.
Adobe Photoshop CS6 brings some interesting new features to this powerful photo editing software. Particularly interesting is the Content Aware function which makes retouching and manipulating photos incredibly easy.

Recent changes

  • Content-Aware Patch — Patch images with greater control using the newest member of the Content-Aware family of technologies. Choose the sample area you want to use to create your patch, and then watch Content-Aware Patch magically blend pixels for a stunning result.
  • Blazingly fast performance and a modern UI — Experience unprecedented performance with the Mercury Graphics Engine, which gives you near-instant results when you edit with key tools such as Liquify, Puppet Warp, and Crop.* Plus, a refined, fresh, and elegant Photoshop interface features dark background options that make your images pop.
  • New and re-engineered design tools — Create superior designs fast. Get consistent formatting with type styles, create and apply custom strokes and dashed lines to shapes, quickly search layers, and much more.
  • You will also discover hundreds of new ways to work faster (PDF) and with greater creative freedom and precision when you dive into Photoshop CS6.

Adobe® Creative Suite® 6 Master Collection software delivers unprecedented performance with blazing-fast 64-bit native support and GPU acceleration. Groundbreaking new creative tools provide innovative ways to design for the latest devices. With exceptional power and precision, you can create inspiring experiences that go anywhere.*

Adobe's 2012 update to its software line for design and creative professionals, Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6) $895.00 at Software Tech store (prices vary; see below), brings new versions of all the most notable products: Photoshop, lllustrator, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro, Flash, and more. Some of the best improvements to the package are under the hood, with better performance and speed, although a few apps visually look different, too.
Other improvements suggest that Adobe has its eye trained on the specific problems digital designers face in terms of porting content to a variety of platforms and formats, like the iPad, Kindle Fire, and smartphones.

Although Adobe's never been stingy in bundling its software into a multitude of packages at different price points, the company has added one drastically different option for CS6 users: Creative Cloud (available May 11). Creative Cloud includes access to everything Adobe has to offer—no holds barred—as well as several exclusive online services, all starting from $49.99 per month. With Creative Cloud, you download and install the apps that you need with a membership-style license. It gives certain kinds of professionals (like freelancers and other project-based professionals) the short-term access they need to some of the apps at a fraction of the price of owning them.

As always with Adobe products, and therefore as to be expected, solo software components are expensive to buy (Photoshop costs $700), and the more affordable can eat up a lot of space. For example, the Design Standard bundle requires 7GB to 8.5GB available hard disk space for installation, plus 2GB or 1GB RAM to operate, for Mac and Windows, respectively.
Nevertheless, Adobe Creative Suite 6 ensures cutting-edge designers have the tools they need to get their work done and publish it online, in print, and on all the major handheld gadgets, too. Adobe Creative Suite is an indispensible product line for pros. CS6 will keep them designing happily.

INFO

Windows 7 is an operating system released by Microsoft on October 22, 2009. It follows the previous (sixth) version of Windows, called Windows Vista.

Like previous versions of Windows, Windows 7 has a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows you to interact with items on the screen using a keyboard and mouse. However, Windows 7 is also includes a feature called "Windows Touch" that supports touchscreen input and multitouch functionality. For example, you can right-click a file by touching it with one finger and tapping it with another. You can also zoom in on an image by touching it with two fingers, then spreading your fingers apart. Windows 7 is bundled with several touch-ready programs that are designed for touchscreen use.

Windows 7 also includes several new multimedia features. One example is "Play To," a program that allows you to stream audio and video to different computers or devices within your house. The "HomeGroup" feature makes it easy to share media files and other data between computers. It also makes it possible to share printers on a home network. The "Remote Media Streaming" feature allows you to access the music, video, and photo libraries on your computer from remote locations.

The search feature in Windows 7, called "Windows Search," allows you to see results of searches as soon as you start typing in the search box. Windows Search categorizes the results by file type and displays text snippets that indicate where the search phrase was found in each result. After the search results are returned, it is possible to narrow the results by filtering them by date, file type, file size, and other parameters. You can search local drives, external hard drives, and networked drives all using the standard Windows Search interface.

Windows 7 is available in the following editions:

Windows 7 Home Premium - the standard version installed with most home PCs and includes all of the features listed above.
Windows 7 Professional - typically installed on business computers and includes all the Home Premium features as well as additional features such as Windows XP mode (XPM) and Domain Join.
Windows 7 Ultimate - the most complete version, which has all of the Professional features as well as BitLocker data protection and additional language support.
The system requirements for Windows 7 are:
1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB of RAM or 2 GB of RAM for the 64-bit version
16 GB of available hard disk space or 20 GB for the 64-bit version

Advanced System Care 5 Full download

Advanced SystemCare Free 5 uses its powerful arsenal of optimization tools to keep your PC feeling fresh and clean. It also includes a couple of features that could help boost performance for either gaming or work purposes--your choice.

Advanced SystemCare's Quick Care option includes the ability to clean your registry, perform a rudimentary malware scan, fix and remove broken shortcuts, delete junk files, and erase browsing tracks. It works in a flash, requires almost no user input, and to make things even easier, can be configured to run on system startup.

The Deep Care option, on the other hand, takes system care to another level. It performs all of the Quick Care items to a much deeper degree, plus it adds several other scans and fixes to its checklist, including disk defragmenting, a Windows vulnerability fix, and a system optimization with several presets. Understandably, this kind of deep digging can sometimes make a user nervous. Fortunately, the program's log records all of its activities, letting you see how each affects your computer.

Scan times for the Quick Care and Deep Care options differ significantly, yet, both processes still seem blazingly fast. For instance, we completed a Deep Care scan in approximately 15 minutes, which is an impressively short time for a system-invasive program like this.

Brand-new to version 5 is the Active Boost function, which runs in the background and automatically improves PC performance by managing your system resources. We recommend enabling it, as it even keeps a log of all the active processes that it manages to speed up. Also important, Version 5 connects to the cloud in order to keep its database up to date.

As for Advanced SystemCare's user interface, we were impressed, to say the least. The main dashboard is superclean, with nifty icons and intuitive navigation. Plus, there's an unimposing smiley face always at the bottom of the screen, indicating your PC's overall health. If you click the Status button next to the smiley, you can also get more detailed info from the system performance monitor.

One part of the program we recommend new users approach with extreme caution is the Turbo Boost, which can be set to optimize for either gaming or work purposes. It sounds fun, but you must first configure the tool by telling it which core system services to disable in order to accelerate your computer's performance. Since the Turbo Boost section doesn't spell out how disabling these services might affect your computer, we highly recommend doing your research before exploring. To its credit, though, Advanced SystemCare can create rescue points, so it's not hard to undo changes if you end up making any mistakes.

One small problem we found was that some of the program's options open in new windows, while others open in the same window. Those in the same window have convenient back-navigation buttons in the upper left; those in new windows are sometimes overlaid directly on top of the previous window and make it hard to see how to return to the previous screen. Also, we were a bit turned off by the cleverly disguised ad for Roboform Password Manager during installation. It looks a bit like a terms-of-service sheet, so be sure to read carefully before your instincts kick in and you automatically click Accept.

Overall, we love Advanced SystemCare's toolset, performance, and convenience. Sure, we wish the program were more explicit about how it changes your computer, but we still think it's an awesome all-in-one system utility, and we highly recommend downloading it.

Acer Iconia A500

Acer Iconia A500 Android tablet

Acer Iconia A500: Design and display

Our first impressions of the Acer Iconia A500 Android tablet weren't all positive, but the longer we played with it the more we appreciated its brushed aluminium back, curved bottom and top edges, and flat sides. We like how the brushed aluminium back wraps around to the bottom and top bezel on the front, and, although Acer can't claim to offer the same superb industrial design that Apple is well-known for, the Iconia A500 feels sturdy and well built. Side-mounted headphone jack, USB and HDMI-out ports, a bottom-mounted proprietary port and a plastic flap housing a microSD card slot along the top complete the Iconia A500's exterior.
The downside to the industrial look and feel of the Iconia A500 is that it is a little on the chunky side, and at 730g it is rather heavy. Acer will be hoping that potential buyers may be happy sacrificing a little size and weight for some extra features — while we think many people will be happy to do so, we still have our reservations about carrying the Iconia A500 around all day. We also didn't like the external buttons: The power, volume and screen-orientation lock keys are all too small considering the size of the unit, and the volume key is not raised enough so it feels a little awkward to press. The plastic flap housing the microSD card slot feels flimsy.
The Acer Iconia A500 has a 10.1in LCD with a 1280x800 resolution. Indoors the display produces vibrant colour and crisp text, but its glossy surface makes it very tough to see in direct sunlight, and its viewing angles aren't great. Importantly, the Iconia A500's display is responsive to touch.

Acer Iconia A500: Software

Along with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v, the Acer Iconia A500 is one of the first tablets to run Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform, which has been specifically designed for tablets. The software is a "vanilla" version of the Honeycomb OS, though Acer does include a few small hubs to store and sort downloaded apps. These include social, eReading, Game Zone and Multimedia; they are merely a fancy bookshelf background where you can group application shortcuts. Android 3.0 Honeycomb has a completely redesigned interface that aims to take advantage of the larger screen of a tablet. New UI features include an "action bar", a contextual option group displayed at the top of the screen, five customisable home screens with a big emphasis on widgets, a recent apps list for easier multitasking, a redesigned on-screen keyboard, a new browser and improved copy and paste.
Most of the changes are positive. The Acer Iconia A500's Web browser is slick, fast and displays Flash content, most of the time with minimal delay. It also supports tabbed Web browsing and the entire browsing experience is as close as you'll find to a full desktop or notebook computer. The on-screen keyboard is also spacious and comfortable to type on once you get used to its layout.
The Android Honeycomb user interface of the Acer Iconia A500, particularly the home screen, looks striking and is easy to use, and the handling of notifications is excellent. The recent apps list also makes flicking back and forth between recently used programs a breeze. We love the flexibility of live widgets, and they are particularly useful on a tablet device with much more screen real estate than a smartphone. We did however notice that flicking between home screens populated with more than three or four widgets does tend to make scrolling jerky.
Despite all Android Honeycomb's positive experiences, it is clear the software is still in its infancy, so the overall out-of-the-box experience isn't as slick as it could be. The Iconia A500's browser still automatically switches to mobile versions of many Web sites (including Facebook) and Flash video performance — a key advantage the device is claimed to hold over the iPad — is hit and miss. Sometimes, the browser would crash trying to load Flash-heavy sites, while other times it would load them almost perfectly. Browsing Twitter, for example, was also clunky at best.
A more pressing issue is the lack of third-party apps in the Android market that have been designed with a tablet in mind. Many common apps, including the official Twitter and Facebook apps, have not yet been optimised for the larger screen size the Iconia A500 offers. Default Google apps like Maps, Gmail and YouTube worked excellently, and there are a handful of downloadable apps like Angry Birds and Pulse News Reader that filled the screen perfectly and worked without issues. But many apps in the Android Market simply resize to fit the Iconia A500's screen. This issue will, of course, change over time as the platform evolves and develops, but means the current user experience offered by Android tablets like the Iconia A500 are still very much a work in progress.

Acer Iconia A500: Performance and hardware

Acer says the Iconia A500 offers a "superb mobile and home entertainment experience". The Iconia A500 supports HD video playback and recording, and has an HDMI-out port, so it can be plugged directly into a high-definition television. It also has a full USB port for storing and transferring files. The Iconia A500 doesn't come preloaded with a file manager but a quick and free download of one from the Android Market (we recommend Astro File Manager) makes it easy to access files on the USB port. Even more convenient is the fact that you can plug in a USB keyboard into the Iconia A500 and use it for text input.
The Acer Iconia A500 is powered by a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor — the same used in the Galaxy Tab 10.1v — and 1GB RAM. The Iconia A500 comes in 16GB and 32GB sizes, and both models come with expandable memory via a microSD card slot. Critically, the tablet felt slick and fast throughout testing.
The Acer Iconia A500 has a rear 5-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel front camera for video calls. Although both take significantly better quality photos than the iPad 2, the quality of still images and HD video recording can't match those captured with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v.
Acer claims the Iconia A500's battery is good for up to 10 hours, but we experienced much less during testing. Though the Iconia A500 often lasted over two days with moderate use, which is a fair result, listening to music and watching videos reduces battery life. We used the Iconia for an hour of video and music listening during our morning and afternoon commute, as well as playing a few games and doing some casual Web browsing and e-mailing, and managed about seven hours of use before the battery needed recharging.
The Acer Iconia A500 starts at $579 for the entry-level 16GB Wi-Fi model, and $678 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model, but it will also be released in Wi-Fi + 3G variants at a later, unannounced date.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android tablet

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has an 8.9in capacitive touchscreen but it's the physical design of this latest Android tablet that is quite impressive — the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is described by Samsung as "the world's thinnest mobile tablet" as it measures just 8.6 millimetres thick.
In addition to its svelte body, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 weighs just 470 grams, making it both thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. Samsung says the Galaxy Tab 8.9's ultra-thin form factor and lightweight design are ideal for business users who frequently travel.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, has a capacitive TFT display with a 1280x800 resolution and features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 also features a 3 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera, and is capable of playing back 1080p HD video, and has a microSD card slot for extra memory.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v, which goes on sale in Australia next month through Vodafone, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 features Samsung's own TouchWiz UX user interface implemented on top of the Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' UI. This makes it among the first Android tablets to run a customised version of Google's 3.0 Honeycomb platform.
Samsung's TouchWiz UX overlay brings a number of new features to the Galaxy Tab 8.9 including a customisable "Live Panel" menu that displays favourite Web sites and social network feeds, an application tray of commonly used features, Samsung's Social Hub, which aggregates e-mail, instant messaging, contacts, calendar and social network connections, a mini apps tray and a "suite of enterprise solutions" for business users. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also pre-loaded with Readers Hub and Music Hub applications that offer more than 2.2 million books, 2000 newspapers in 49 languages, 2300 magazines in 22 languages, and 13 million songs.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will come in six model variants — three with Wi-Fi and three with Wi-Fi + 3G. Both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G variants will be available with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal memory.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is expected to be available in Australia in Q3 2011, meaning it should hit our shores sometime between July and September. Pricing and carrier details have yet to be announced.

It's been a long time coming but Nokia has finally unveiled its first Windows-powered smartphone, the Lumia 800. It shares an almost identical, physical design to the MeeGo-powered N9 but utilises the latest 7.5 "Mango" version of Windows Phone software.

We described the Nokia N9 as the best looking and slickest device the company has ever produced, so it's no surprise to see the Nokia Lumia 800 use an almost identical design. It's a candybar handset constructed from solid polymer and manufactured from the same material often found in ice hockey helmets. Like the N9, the Lumia 800's polycarbonate casing is coloured all the way through in the manufacturing process, so scratches, dents or marks from everyday use will not show up. The Nokia Lumia 800 will be available in black, cyan and magenta colours.

The Nokia Lumia 800 has a slightly smaller 3.7in AMOLED screen compared to the N9's 3.9in screen, but it uses ClearBlack technology that claims better blacks and improved outdoor visibility. As the Lumia 800's screen is slightly smaller, it has a lower 480x800 resolution compared to the N9's 480x854 screen. The Lumia 800's screen is coated in Gorilla glass that Nokia says prevents scratches and cracks. The phone has no front-facing camera for video calls, but it has a dedicated camera shutter key: a standard requirement on all Windows Phones. The only other physical controls are on the right side in the form of volume buttons and a lock/power key. The bottom houses a speaker while a standard headphone jack, micro-USB port and a micro-SIM card slot are aligned on the top.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is powered by a single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, has 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. It also has an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics that doubles as a 720p HD video recorder.
If you're wondering why the Nokia Lumia 800 doesn't pack a dual-core processor and doesn't have a memory card slot it's because this hardware isn't supported in Windows Phones. Any Windows Phone device is forced to meet strict hardware requirements by Microsoft, including a capacitive, multitouch display with a minimum 800x480 resolution, a 1GHz or better processor, at least 256MB of RAM, a minimum of 8GB of internal storage, and a GPS receiver. All Windows Phone devices must also have an accelerometer and digital compass, an ambient light sensor, a 5-megapixel camera or better, an FM radio and seven buttons (back, Start, search, camera, power/lock, volume up/down).

These requirements make Windows Phone devices very similar, so physical design and exclusive software is the main differentiator between models. The Nokia Lumia 800 includes Nokia Drive, a free turn-by-turn GPS navigator, Nokia Music, a global music streaming application and ESPN Sports Hub, a sports app which is apparently exclusive to Nokia's Windows Phones. We can't judge until we get our hands on the Lumia 800, but only the Nokia Drive app seems like a worthy and very welcome inclusion. The Lumia 800 also includes a free 25GB of SkyDrive storage, but this is a feature available on all Windows Phones.

Unlike the N9, the Nokia Lumia 800 isn't a quad-band 3G device. It supports Optus and Vodafone's 900 and 2100MHz 3G networks, but won't work on Telstra's 850MHz Next G network in Australia. Nokia may produce a separate model that will work on the Next G network, but this remains to be seen.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will launch in various markets before the end of 2011, but it's not expected to hit Australian shores until early 2012. Pricing and Australian-specific availability has yet to be announced.

Avira Internet Security 2012

Very good malware blocking, good malware cleanup. Firewall blocks exploits, resists attack. Not much impact on system performance. Spam filter blocked almost no valid mail.

Weak against rootkits. Phishing protection misses much. Spam filter significantly slowed mail download. Bare-essentials parental control easily defeated. Rudimentary backup.

The antivirus component is the best part of this suite, with good malware cleanup and better real-time protection. Phishing protection and parental control, however, are not so hot. Overall it's a good suite, but not a great one.

security suite from Avira came out early in 2010, almost a year and a half ago. With the release of Avira Internet Security 2012 ($59.99, direct; $89.99 for 3 licenses), Avira has now joined the model-year cycle like most of its competition. Some of this suite's components are quite good, others not so hot.
The latest suite's appearance is quite a departure from that of Avira Premium Security Suite 10 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 2.5 stars). In fact, the suite and standalone antivirus have the same layout and controls. In the free standalone antivirus the suite-only controls are simply disabled.

protection against Malware and Phishing
The good people at Avira want to make sure everyone can have protection against viruses and other malware, so they pack their toughest malware protection into the free antivirus. The suite offers the same protection, so I'll simply summarize my findings here. For full details please read my review of Avira Free Antivirus 2012 (Free, 4 stars).
Almost all of the independent labs that I follow include Avira's technology in their testing, and they give it generally good marks. It attained the highest rating in on-demand and retrospective tests by AV-Comparatives.org, but only just achieved certification in whole-protect tests by AV-Test.org.

GFI VIPRE Internet Security 2012

GFI VIPRE Internet Security 2012

When you look at the main window of GFI's latest VIPRE antivirus, you may get the feeling something's missing. There are three helpful panels offering access to scan status, protection, and updates, with a blank area below. GFI's security suite, GFI VIPRE Internet Security 2012 ($49.95, direct) looks almost identical to the antivirus. However, it fills in that blank with a firewall panel and also adds spam filtering and phishing protection. The antispam component is the best I've found in any suite so far.
This lightweight suite is a real bargain if you're trying to protect a houseful of computers. For just $20 more than the single-license price, you can purchase a home site license. This license lets you install VIPRE on up to 10 computers in your household.
Antivirus Protection
With one small exception, antivirus protection in this suite is exactly the same as what's offered by GFI VIPRE Antivirus 2012 ($39.95 direct, 3 stars), so I'll just summarize those results here. For full details, please read my review of the standalone antivirus.

Testing got off to a rocky start, with the installation or initial update failing on more than half the test systems. Most of the problems were solved by simply retrying the install or manually launching an update. Tech support supplied a command-line cleanup tool that fixed the one remaining problem system.
VIPRE detected an impressive 91 percent of the malware samples, Only Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) detected more, with 94 percent. However, due to incomplete cleanup, VIPRE only scored 6.2 points for malware removal.
VIPRE detected all of the rootkit samples but left most of them still running, earning a low 3.3 points for rootkit removal. And it detected one threat over and over, endlessly promising (but failing) to remove it on reboot.

Crysis 2

Crysis 2 review: This sequel picks up after the events of the original game, dropping you in the middle of a near-future NYC

Rain hammers down on the streets of New York City's Times Square. Upturned police cruisers spit fire into the night as the top half of a giant skyscraper lay crushed over the back of an 18-wheeler. A NYC police station is a few feet from my location, but I'm hardly safe. A State of Emergency's been declared, ordering the "Evacuation of Manhattan," and cement barricades lined with razor wire alongside heavily-armored military vehicles choke off the famous intersection.
I clench a Joint Anti-Tank Weapon -- or JAW -- in my hands, remembering my orders to defend this chopper evac site at all costs, as something stomps towards my location: A hulking mechanical killer built from nearly indestructible alien technology, inaptly named the "Pinger." This is just one of many missions packed into Crysis 2's meaty campaign (which takes a good 10-12 hours to complete), but it provides a clear image of what it's like to actually play the game, all of which takes place in various real and fictional locations in and around New York City.
Crysis 2 picks up after the events of the original game, dropping you in the middle of a near-future NYC, which is stricken by not one, but two disasters: a viral pandemic and an alien invasion. At the beginning of the game you inherit the new and improved Nanosuit 2, which the game describes as a piece of combat technology so complete that "the divide between man and weapon disappears." Crysis 2's science fiction feels a bit familiar at times, but the experience itself is really what makes Crytek's multiplatform sequel stand out amongst others in its class. It's an exhilarating action game, both in single-player and multiplayer, that sets a new standard for sci-fi themed shooters.
I played the original Crysis in 2007, but like many gamers I'm not convinced that I really played the game...at least, not the way Crytek intended it to be experienced. I played it on a pig of a PC hardly ideal for gaming, which means I had to crank down the quality to prevent my computer from imploding. With that in mind, Crysis 2 is my first "real" taste of the visual spectacle the original was known for delivering. And I don't think I'm alone in that, considering the first game only released on PC, requiring high-end PC hardware to run properly.
While I wasn't necessarily a Crysis "expert" heading into playing the sequel, console first-person shooters are my genre of choice. I play everything from realistic military shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, to sci-fi themed offerings like Killzone and Halo. Interestingly, Crysis 2 doesn't exactly fit into either group. While it has aliens, futuristic weapons, and other sci-fi elements, the universe Crysis 2 presents is more grounded in realism than shooters with similar subject matter like Halo or The Conduit. The game does such an exceptional job of combining real-life (New York City, existing weapon technology) with fantasy (aliens, fictional weapons, skintight suits that grant superhuman abilities), that I think it'll appeal to a lot of shooter fans in both camps.
One of the biggest things I walked away from Crysis 2 with was how much I've enjoyed the multiplayer. With many FPS games I usually have a better time with the single-player experience, but Crysis 2's multiplayer is absolutely electrifying. What really sets it apart from other online shooters is how (in most multiplayer modes) everyone is battling in Nanosuits -- unlike the campaign, where you're the only one taking advantage of its unique abilities. Multiplayer matches become frenzied and intense due to the limitless ways you can adapt to and take advantage of your own Nanosuit. And the more you play you begin to develop new tactics to engage the enemy with, who likely have their own unique style of Nanosuit fighting.
On top of your basic Nanosuit features like Predator-like cloaking and the ability to temporarily bolster the strength of your armor, there are a number of multiplayer modules, or perks (21 in total), that you can assign to your Nanosuit. These include everything from a proximity alarm that signals when you're near enemies to my personal favorite: the "air stomp," where you jump up into the air and (hopefully) land down on an enemy with all the force of a freight elevator dropping 30 floors and slamming into the ground. The modules, which you unlock with experience points, add another layer of strategy to multiplayer matches.

Battlefield 3

EA’s latest blockbuster is two distinct games -- excellent, complex multiplayer and simple, short but fun single player

Battlefield 3: Single player

The Battlefield franchise didn’t start with any kind of single-player storyline — for years it was strictly an AI-only version of the multiplayer game, for gamers with shoddy Internet connections and no willing family member for a lift to the nearest LAN party. The Bad Company spin-off changed this, giving traditionally multiplayer-hungry players a chance to settle down with some semblance of a plot and character development.
Battlefield 3, in its efforts to emulate and overtake its Call of Duty competition, has a fully-fledged single player campaign component. To say the storyline is like something out of a book you’d buy to read in an airport isn’t entirely inaccurate — think US soldiers in the Middle East, stolen suitcase nukes, Russian special forces, rogue spies, lots of angry bad guys — but that’s not to say it isn’t fun. It should come as no surprise that Andy McNab was a technical advisor for the game’s storyline; he’s also written a novel to accompany the storyline and build back-story for one of the playable characters.

Battlefield 3: Multiplayer

If you were one of the three million people who pre-ordered Battlefield 3 worldwide, chances are you wanted it for the multiplayer aspect, which has long been a hallmark of the series. A week-long open beta test for Battlefield 3 got our hopes up, and we’re pleased to say that, bar a few teething problems, Battlefield 3’s multiplayer aspect is excellent: it’s one of the best multiplayer gaming experiences we’ve had in a long time, and we’d go so far as to say it’s one of the best squad- and team-based multiplayer games that you could buy.
Battlefield 3’s new Frostbite 2.0 engine does an excellent job with the expansive maps of the multiplayer mode. Nine huge maps that can support up to 64 players in various gameplay modes are all incredibly richly detailed and remarkably versatile, lending themselves to a near-infinite range of play styles — skulk around the edges of the conflict as a long-range sniper, pilot an attack helicopter in the close air above combat, or keep your feet on the ground as an assault rifle-toting grunt. There are dozens of weapons and dozens of vehicles, each of which has plenty of unlockable add-ons, like heat-seeking missiles for a jet or a thermal scope for a machinegun — there’s an intense sense of satisfaction from getting one more kill and unlocking another perky extra. There are a number of different game modes — beyond the standard capture-and-defend-choke-points Conquest, there’s also the fast-attacking Rush and simpler Team Deathmatch (and a Squad Deathmatch mode for smaller conflicts). They’re all extremely well balanced and we’ve consistently had a ball in public servers, with random players, in every game mode.

Battlefield 3: Conclusion

Battlefield 3 is very much a game of two halves: excellent, peerless, unparalleled multiplayer with hours and hours of replay value, versus a cookie-cutter single player experience we probably wouldn’t bother playing again. Co-op sits somewhere in between as a tacked-on extra. Don’t buy Battlefield 3 for the single player — buy it for the multiplayer; we guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

Nokia N9 smartphone

Nokia N9: Design and display

Nokia is no stranger to excellent design and construction: despite many of its recent smartphones bring plagued by poor software, we've always admired Nokia's build quality, craftsmanship and industrial design. The N9 is no different — it's a candybar handset constructed from solid polymer. According to Nokia the N9 is manufactured from the same material often found in ice hockey helmets. The company says the phone's polycarbonate casing is coloured all the way through in the manufacturing process, so scratches, dents or marks from everyday use will not show up. The N9 is available in black, cyan and magenta colours in Australia: the cyan colour in particular is a real head turner and will definitely stand out in a store.
The N9 is Nokia's first-ever "pure touch" smartphone. It has no keypad or home button on the front — the only physical controls are on the right side in the form of volume buttons and a lock key. The bottom houses a speaker while a standard headphone jack, micro-USB port and SIM card slot are aligned on the top. A flap covers the micro-USB port but it's awkward to open: you need to dig your fingertip into the left side of the cover for it to flip up and you need to do this every time you want to charge the phone. The N9 doesn't have a removable battery and uses a micro-SIM card rather than a full-sized one. The only other smartphones on the Australian market to use a micro-SIM are Apple's iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
The entire front of the Nokia N9 is taken up by a 3.9in, super AMOLED, edge-to-edge display. The screen uses gorilla glass technology that Nokia says prevents scratches and cracks and the glass is curved outwards in order to achieve a more natural swiping motion. This curve makes content on the N9 appear as if it's floating underneath the screen. Viewing angles are excellent and the display is very bright, though it has a yellow tinge when compared directly to the iPhone 4 on full brightness and lacks an automatic brightness setting. Text is both crisp and clear.

Nokia N9: User interface

The MeeGo operating system running the N9 is focussed on simplicity: Nokia says it intended to "cut through the clutter associated with traditional smartphone design." Although it has a learning curve if you’re coming from an iPhone or Android smartphone, the user experience of the N9 feels natural. Swiping from edge-to-edge to unlock the screen, go back to the default home screen or see important notifications is effortless and easy.
The idea around navigating the N9 is that whenever you are in an application you simply swipe from the edge of the screen (either side) to go back to the home screens. At times we were left longing for a back button but after a few days use the swipe gestures become second nature. You can also set the N9 to close apps by swiping down when in an app — a similar action in parts to the webOS platform that powered HP's now-defunct TouchPad tablet.
The N9 interface is based around three "home views" — an applications screen that lists all your apps, a notifications screen for calls, messages, calendar events and social networking feeds and a currently open applications screen. Nokia says there is no limit to the amount of apps you have open and you won't see a message or error if the memory becomes full: we managed to open 15 apps without a direct affect on performance, but there are times when we wish the N9 had a faster, dual-core processor. Apps sometimes take a few seconds to open and more taxing tasks like playing back video files does result in a little slowdown.
Unfortunately, the Nokia N9 does not support the ability to create folders for app sorting, so the app list screen does become cluttered if you download a lot of apps. You can press and hold an app icon to move it where you want on the app screen, but this is the only method of sorting: you can't sort by alphabetical order or most used, for example.
